Moxa Cupping
Moxa cupping involves the use of moxa (dried mugwort herb) in conjunction with cupping. There are two main ways it's practiced
1. Moxa Inside the Cup (Indirect Heat)
-
Moxa is lit and placed on or near the outside of the cup, or attached to the top (often in a cage or on a cotton ball).
-
The heat from the burning moxa warms the cup, which in turn warms the skin and underlying tissues.
-
Suction is either created first or simultaneously as the moxa burns.
2. Applied to the Skin Before Cupping
-
Moxa is burned near or directly on the skin (with a barrier like ginger, garlic, or salt) before cups are applied.
-
The cups are then placed over or near the heated area to lock in warmth and stimulate energy flow.
